When Legends go…

The recent passing away of celebrated Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar brought to memories his wonderful creations in the form of his films.

Dilip Kumar (birth name Mohammed Yusuf Khan) turned to an acting career in 1944 with his debut Jwar Bhata. His last contribution to Indian cinema was Qila in the year 1998. The actor suffered from prostate cancer and breathed his last on 7th July 2021 at Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai.

With many versatile productions and various recognitions in his name, Dilip Ji is a perfect exemplar of a ‘flexible yet firm’ working approach. He always carried his signature style and yet was bendable enough to cope with diverse roles. A simple actor who had a significant impact on his audience! Having watched several of his movies, I recently viewed one newly added on Netflix

Not only professionally, but he had seen ups and downs in his personal life as well. While he has narrated the unseen part of him in his autobiography Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow (a book on my reading list), he and his wife Saira Banu endured a lot together.  Humbly accepting all changes that life had to offer, they embraced even their childless life as God’s will. It takes character to withstand such adversities with grace. While his life might not be perfect, we still have a lot of things worth imbibing.

Let’s all pray for him to rest in peace and solace for his family.

Before ending, a little thought that touched my mind – we often remember people only when they are no more with us. However, overlook them when they are alive and very much with us. Not sure how successfully I’ll be able to do; but going forward, we’ll plan to share part of our space to discuss people #makingadifference.
