Disinfecting schools the right way

48% of parents are unwilling to send their kids to schools until they get Covid vaccines: Survey. What should the schools do?

We briefly covered the entire idea in our earlier post, but most schools are probably taking these measures and more. They’d, however, need to cover every aspect of the idea of opening up in order to instill confidence in the parents. Before we proceed with summarizing the steps, a quick look at this video will be quite helpful. Although it is from a couple of months back, one of China’s schools here represents an ideal preparation and in-person attention to detail for kids.

  • As a primary measure, the school administration and key staff members must set up a meeting with the local bodies/government authorities.
  • Educating the cleaning/housekeeping, kitchen staff, hostel managers, and other key people in this respect about the requisite cleaning, sanitization, and disinfection of the school compound, classroom floor, and each and every room.
  • It is also very crucial to disinfect the school-sponsored/run commute sources, such as buses, vans, heavy vehicles, etc. All these cleaning and disinfection tasks must be mandatorily done at least once a day before the start of play. A repeat of the same, probably during break time and another in the evening, would be good. However, this is up to every school to decide, considering various factors.
  • For all this, the choice of an ideal disinfectant is significant. The market these days would be overflowing with powerful and effective disinfectants. However, we need to be a little cautious here about the composition of the liquid as well. It would be best to consider something that is natural, non-toxic, and chemical-free, as it is the “schools” we are talking about. There would be individuals starting from a 4-year-old kid to old staff members.
  • Availing the prerequisite, hand-wash, and hand-sanitizers to children, the teaching faculty would need to ensure that the students wash and sanitize their hands at regular intervals, before and after breaks, before/during/after sports periods, etc. Not only the students, the teaching staff, caretakers, helpers, security people, drivers, janitors, and all the working staff need to ensure sanitization at regular intervals. As studies suggest, it is adults who are more susceptible to the virus than children.
  • Educating the students on the essentiality of wearing masks and maintenance of proper hygiene. This would ensure that the students understand (maybe to some extent) the changes happening around them, rather than just doing and following things for the sake of doing them.

This level of preparation would definitely inculcate some confidence in the parents.

Lastly, Vaccination. At the end of the day, it is imperative for every individual to be vaccinated. Schools can promote vaccination as a message or initiate vaccination camps in the school buildings (for parents and school staff to start with which can later be extended to school students). We understand that this would require factoring in various aspects, hence dropping this note just as a suggestion.

Each school can determine its own feasibility in implementing the aforementioned steps/suggestions.
