Ummm &#8211; we breathe all the time &#8211; then..?)<b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Breathing Exercises\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Belly breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also called diaphragmatic breathing, the exercising starts by breathing in through your nose. Once you do that, the belly fills up with air. It would be better if you were in a slight \u2018lie down\u2019 position for this exercise. Next, breathe out through your mouth and put your hands lightly on your belly to feel it rising and falling. Relax your shoulders, neck, and entire body while at it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Pursed lip breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth almost twice as long, with pursed lips. This helps in keeping your airways open for a long time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You may also join breathing clubs in your area, if any, to get associated with \u201clike-headed\u201d people (I coined this term for people headed in the same direction ?)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid Smoking<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As per a study by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/data_statistics\/fact_sheets\/health_effects\/effects_cig_smoking\/index.htm\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a><\/span> (CDC), health risks and resultant deaths from smoking are more than from the below factors combined.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Alcohol use<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Drug use<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">HIV<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Fire accidents<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Road accidents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Millions of people die annually as a result of cigarette smoking. It causes respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, COPD, and cancer. Lungs are the main organs impacted by smoking as smoke damages the airways and tiny air sacs found in the lungs. Asthma, chronic bronchitis, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/lung-health-diseases\/lung-disease-lookup\/emphysema\">emphysema<\/a><\/span>, and lung cancer are some of the dreadful diseases caused by smoking.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Right Posture<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Your sitting posture has an impact on your lungs and heart. This is specifically true for people with a sedentary lifestyle. Poor posture may cause breathing problems as it can tighten your chest and doesn\u2019t give enough space for the lungs to expand and take in and circulate required oxygen to the body. Sitting straight and upright might help with a proper \u2018breathing\u2019 space for the lungs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Healthy Foods\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eat healthily, breathe healthily. C<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Beetroot &#8211; source of nitrates<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Pumpkin &#8211; source of carotenoids<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Apple &#8211; source of antioxidants<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Turmeric &#8211; antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Blueberries &#8211; source of nutrients<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Tomato &#8211; source of lycopene<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Red cabbage &#8211; source of anthocyanins<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Green tea &#8211; source of Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Olive oil &#8211; source of Vit. E<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Oysters &#8211; source of zinc, copper, selenium, and B vitamins<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Edamame &#8211; source of isoflavones<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Yogurt &#8211; source of potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and selenium<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Coffee &#8211; source of caffeine and antioxidants<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Brazil nuts &#8211; source of selenium<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Cocoa &#8211; source of flavonoid antioxidants<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Lentils &#8211; source of nutrients<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Anchovies &#8211; source of iron, calcium, and selenium<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Barley &#8211; source of fiber<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">Leafy green vegetables &#8211; source of magnesium<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid Pollutants<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pollutants in the air pose a direct threat to your lungs. Hence, we, especially people with chronic respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis, should avoid highly polluted surroundings. These days, since we all are very particular about sanitizing and disinfecting whatever and wherever we can (and we should), we must be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterloc.com\/blog\/my-brother-is-asthmatic-is-it-safe-to-disinfect-my-house\/\">cautious about the substance we use for the same, specifically around people with such problems<\/a><\/span>. Also, avoid being a passive smoker (it can be more dangerous than active smoking).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay Hydrated\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Drinking water makes breathing easy, as it helps thin the mucus lining of your lungs and airways. A thick and sticky mucus slows down the body\u2019s respiratory process.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Physical Activity\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Physical exercise and a physically active routine keeps the lungs healthy. With exercise, the lungs become stronger, work hard to supply the required amount of oxygen to the muscles, and hence strengthen the entire breathing process. It ultimately reduces the risk of severe health problems including lung cancer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sterloc.com\/blog\/international-infection-prevention-week-2021\/\"><b>Infection Prevention<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/understanding-idiopathic-pulmonary-fibrosis\/ways-to-keep-your-lungs-healthy-and-whole#4.-Prevent-infections\">The best way to avoid lung infections is to keep your hands clean<\/a><\/span>. Staying happy and having a good laugh resonates with good health physically, emotionally, and psychologically. It lightens the mood and lessens the stress. With laughter, the lungs work hard as the muscles of your chest, diaphragm, and abdomen tighten. The lungs expand and provide more space for oxygen exchange.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regular Check-ups\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you are someone already suffering from COPD or any other lung disorder, then it is advisable to have regular follow-ups with your doctor (or as prescribed). Plus, the doctor must be consulted immediately if you observe some untoward symptoms.
